Leaders and the Graveyard of Credibility

Written by @the_okayest_

It has been a long time since I’ve written anything. One thing I would always hear my NCOs say when I was a junior Soldier was “when you guys become the NCOs, it’s not about you anymore, it’s about your dudes. They are constantly watching and their perception of you along with your credibility is at stake”.

It’s not too difficult, in a sense, to become a NCO. The difficult part is being the NCO your guys deserve. This is even more true reflecting on what my NCOs told me as a junior Soldier. You are constantly being watched, you are constantly under scrutiny, and you will have to earn the trust of your guys.

They really are watching every move you make so they can form an opinion of what they think of you. Joe is always going to do something to make you mad or disappoint you, that’s expected. What Joe isn’t going to do is change their opinion of you when you disappoint them or let them down. Taking care of your guys is easy. Again, the hard part is earning their trust and maintaining your credibility with them.

It’s the little things Joe appreciates about a leader that goes a long way. Doing things with them that you’re asking them to do. Making sure they’re squared away, whether it be on the admin side or job performance side. Shielding them from as much shit as your rank will allow and so on. The old saying goes, be the leader you wish you had. Sometimes Joe doesn’t have that option so you, as a NCO, should be the leader they deserve.
