Leader’s Lesson #5

Anonymous CPT
United States Army

I, @theleadershuddle, am publishing the following article with the permission of the CPT who submitted the contents below. The contents of this article are made up of various documents from an investigation this CPT is involved in. Information was purposely redacted as this situation is on-going. The contents of this article are not being posted in an attempt for the CPT to retain or regain their position as the Company Commander. This CPT feels it necessary to be transparent in what occurred so that others may learn from this situation. The intention of this article is to demonstrate the following:

1. Small problems can turn into serious issues if left unresolved;
2. As the pendulum swings all the way towards “People first”, programs meant to help people can quickly become weapons used against others, wielded at the whim of those who know how;
3. If multiple echelons neglect an organization long enough, the climate will be toxic to anyone who tries to fix it. There will exist a self-fulfilling prophecy of discontent;
4. Start the discussion on this rather large culture change that is happening.

A bit from the CPT:
“At the risk of sounding pompous, I’ve been told countless times in my career that I’m “a great officer, “the best” this, “the kindest” that, etc.. In command, I had multiple NCOs tell me I was the best commander in the BN and I had the stats to back it up. Soldiers loved what I did. Officers loved that I cared. NCOs loved that I listened to them. But… I had a BC who hated me and showed that to my Soldiers. My BC hated me openly and talked down to me in front of them. When one person didn’t get their way, they knew I had no support and they used the EO program to hang me. I want people to know that this isn’t about us and our careers. It’s about doing what’s right for the Soldiers. No matter what that means for us. We see guys like CPT Crouser on that carrier who was relieved for taking care of his people. That’s the new world we live in. Don’t give in to the bullshit mentality of kissing ass for the sake of a promotion or career. I didn’t join for myself. I wanted to take care of people. I did take care of people. We are headed for disaster the way we villainize anyone who doesn’t follow that status quo. I have seen some horrendous leaders at this post and they keep getting promoted because they kiss ass and grandstand. If we don’t change that, we’re doomed. Don’t be that guy. Be there for your Soldiers. Take care of them. Be the change. If the Army kicks us all out then they have to figure it out. People first means people first. Not just when it’s easy, but when it’s hard too.

This article is lengthy and contains a lot of documents but that is done to ensure transparency in this process and the steps the CPT took to attempt to avoid the events that unfolded with they being the person of blame.

Disappointed, but Not Surprised
